What is a Digital Product Passport

Dec 04, 2024

What is Digital Product Passport

By 2030 every product sold on the EU market will need to carry with it a digital record that contains important sustainability information about the product, such as the raw materials used and carbon footprint. According to the EU law, this information must be accessible to the end-user, via a QR-code or similar.

Known also as DPP, each passport will also show how to care for and repair the product as well as re-use and finally recycle the product. These passports are coming into law in a bid to extend the lifetime of products and to also provide transparency to consumers. It means that DPP information needs to be clearly communicated to the customer or end-user in their native language.

Every passport should include important sustainability information. It’s not set in stone exactly what information will be needed but most agree that it’s going to include:

• CO2 emissions for the entire product lifecycle

• Source of raw materials

• Use of raw materials

• Care and repair information

• Re-use possibilities

• Recycling information

The passport needs to be easily available for consumers in their native language but it also needs to be there for recyclers and every step of the way through the product’s lifecycle.

The whole idea is to extend the lifetime of the products we use and increase transparency when it comes to sustainability issues.

This applies to all products sold in the EU except for food, feed and pharmaceuticals. It doesn’t matter if the products aren’t manufactured in the EU either. If they are imported from another continent, a digital products passport is still required. So, even if it's an EU initiative it will affect the global supply chain.
