The certified B Corporation OCEANR has just automated the creation of digital product passports for one thousand of its products. Kolla designed and created the passports and automated the process by connecting to OCEANR’s product data in Plytix. The key to a seamless DPP pilot was good quality, well-structured data and a final design that lives and breathes the brand while keeping all stakeholders informed.

OCEANR designs and produces high-performance, eco-conscious apparel, primarily for the hospitality industry. They are a certified B Corporation, proving that they’re upholding strict sustainability requirements. In fact, they live and breath sustainability. It makes them the brand they are. “Sustainability is not only part of our identity, but also a way to help customers

and partners make more informed, responsible choices,” says Tom Cotter, founder of OCEANR. “By acting as a front runner, we aim to increase transparency, raise expectations, and make it easier for others in the value chain to choose and prioritise more sustainable products. Digital product passports are a natural extension of that.”

“By implementing DPP, we give our partners and end customers access to verified information about materials, sourcing, production, and environmental impact. This builds trust, supports informed purchasing decisions, and reinforces credibility in an industry where greenwashing is still a challenge,” adds Cotter. Today, OCEANR’s product data is in Plytix, a highly popular PIM system. Instead of doing a pilot with just three to four products, 1,000 of OCEANR’s 6,000 products were piloted to really test how to automate the production of their DPP’s.

Gather data OCEANR already has a good picture of their supply chain including data surrounding CO2 emissions, water usage and more. For some of their products, they currently have more information than is likely to be required according to the EU-regulations. But for OCEANR, it’s important that all this information is visible for everyone. In other words, this is an opportunity for them to show that they are not just complying but going beyond what’s needed. Manage data

Almost all the data they needed was already in Plytix. Their CO2 calculations and other environmental measurements were in another platform and this was imported into Plytix also so that all data could be managed in one place; a single source of truth. Communicate data

Kolla designed a specific template for OCEANR that was in line with their brand but also aligned with what they wanted to say and how they wanted to say it. Part of this process included reviewing what information was required from an EU-compliance perspective and what information was good to have from a branding, marketing and sales perspective. “We appreciate the quality of the visual representation, which present complex and detailed information in a clear, structured, and visually appealing way,” says Cotter. “The design effectively conveys key data and insights, making it easier for both internal teams and external partners to understand product information at a glance.

When the overall design was done and approved, the next step was simply to fetch the correct data attributes from Plytix and ensure it all flowed into Kolla in the right way. After a few design tweaks, the DPP’s were ready. A unique QR-code is generated with every product in the Kolla platform which OCEANR can now use in their labelling.

“We really value how the solution integrates seamlessly with our existing systems, maintaining operational efficiency while enhancing transparency and usability,” says Cotter. Among the information in the OCEANR passports is links to their ‘take-back programme’ where they encourage the return of clothing that is no longer in use so that it can be recycled into new clothes. Similarly, OCEANR is able to use the digital product passports to tell their sustainability story and encourage others to do the same.
